Layers and layers of ASH!

Rocks

We went to Volacano Poas, it was awesome! We saw a huge rock with ash, how weird is that?
I asked the guide why is that rock with ash, and he said because when there are huge explosions some of the ash gets up and cover it. Oh cool!, I said.

My class went to Poas last Friday. It was a rainy day. We were walking one hour,we were starving and wanting to drink water. We did that to see this interesting thing: the color white¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ We were so mad we couldn´t believe it, wanting to see the crater, but instead we see white¡¡ Well, we couldn´t see the crater, but we could see birds, the green and yellow squirrel, rocks and other things. That was a fun field trip.

Poas Volcano Field Trip

On November 13th, the 4th grade went to Volcano Poas. When we were done looking at the volcano crater we went on a hike in a forest. Alot of people thought it made them tired. Others thought it was cool and was fun to look at the amazing nature! The trail was very long. Also the bridges are slippery. So you need to watch out! Every once in a while the kids would stop to rest. There was some cool stuff we saw on the hike! I even saw a small snake hole!

I'll tell you what we saw and what we didn't see in Poas. We were about to get on the bus...wait...wait!, let's keep that part and go right to this. We walked for fifteen minutes with nothing to eat and nothing to drink, our legs hurt and when we got to the main crater we saw a very interesting color,WHITE!!! simply white! But when we got to the platform we saw some plants before seeing more white. But at least we saw cool stuff, like the yelow green squirrel and the poor man's umbrella.

Why are there brown leaves?

When we went to Poas on a field trip. We saw plants that where brown because of the acid it was killing the plants. when the volcano erupts and throws vapors that fall like acid rain and kills plants. Thats why there’s a very famous color brown found on some plants.

When we were walking at Poas Volcano we saw many things. First off all, it was very cold and rainy. When we were walking in the cloud forest we saw a squirrel called green and yellow squirrel. It was so cute. We also saw a plant called the Poorman's Umbrella, it is named that way because it is shaped like an umbrella and poor people use it to cover themselves from the rain. We saw another plant called puas which means spine in Spanish, the volcano was named after this spiky plant because it sound just like Poas and because of the great quanity there is in the area of the volcano. When we passed the cloud forest we found a guide. He showed us some other plants and we got to the main crater. The guide started explaining things to some of us, meanwhile the rest were on a little look out view point, but it was so cloudy that all you could see was like a white wall. As you see there were not very good moments, but sometimes it could be very fun like when Lauren was walking on wet wood and she slipped and fell flat on the ground. Or when Nathalie was scared she would fall in the crater when the only thing she could see of it was white. Well, after that the guide showed us a geocache that was put into the volcano. We also saw different rock layers. There was a hole on a rock were a animal lived. It was very interesting because the animal made the hole. It was kinda perfect but it was so weird. Later,I smashed the rock it was so soft that it left a mark. I saw a little bit of volcanic ash, too. We had a great time at Poas! by Nicky

Layers of Ash from Poas

The layers on the rocks.

Next to the crater, next to me, 4th grade saw …Layers on a giant rock!!!

One of the layers we saw was made of ash. Can you believe it!? I think that one of the layers was red lava, and another one is/was lava covered by ash, maybe because it was gray rock.

Extra Information:

Cakes have layers to, but they are made of cream. by Josefina

The kids of fourth grade were studying the volcanoes, so the teachers decided to go the Volcano Poas . When we were going to the Laguna Botos, Nicole was talking with the guide about how they can measure the crater and see when the volcano may erupt. He was also talking about the birds that live in the volcano for example, the humming bird. When Nicole was near the Laguna Botos, she saw a yellow tail squirrel that used his tail like an umbrella. When Nicole and the guide were almost in the parking lot the guide was telling Nicole about some mushrooms that were growing in the bark of a tree. That was REALLY Cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YELLOW-GREEN SQUIRREL

AT POAS VOLCANO,THERE ARE NOT MANY MAMMALS. ONE MAMMAL IS THE YELLOW-GREEN SQUIRREL. WE FOUND THE SQUIRREL BETWEEN 2 BRANCHES WITH IT TAIL ON IT'S HEAD TO PROTECT IT FROM THE RAIN. IT LOOKED SO CUTE AND SO WELL FED BECAUSE IT WAS SATISFIED.

Last Friday the 13th of November, we went to Poas Volcano. We saw these plants that were like umbrellas! Maybe a long time ago they used them for real umbrellas. The name of the plants are The Poor Man's Umbrella.

Terracing and cooking

Did you know that farmers that live on a high mountain have a big problem?
The problem is that when it rains all the mud comes down the hill and destroyes all the vegetables that they are farming. They have tried lots of things for the vegetables not to be destroyed, but the best ways are planting trees and making terracing. First, the trees help because the roots hold the mud so the mud doesn´t move and second is you make terracing- mud is not going to go fast enough to destroy the vegetables.

The whole 4th grade

A sedimentary rock comes in different layers. The day before we went on the field trip,we made sedimentary rock that can be eaten. First,we put melted butter, then we put little pieces of cookies on top. Third,we put some cream, then some chocolate, white chocolate,at last some nuts. Yum! On the field trip,we went to see real sedimentary rocks. It is made when a volcano explodes some lava goes in to the water. There are different things like rocks and sand in the rivers, layers form then it gets pressure, different things come together. Then it makes a sedimentary rock.

Making our rocks!!

In our reading groups, we are reading Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing and Stone Fox.
We have to do jobs of what we read and write it on a paper.
Some jobs are the summurizer , predictor, illustrator / descriptive phrases, word wizard and discussion director.
In predictor, you have to predict what will happen in the chapter you are about to read. In word wizard,we have to find interesting words and write the definition. In discussion director, we have to discuss what we read and make up good questions that the kids in the group can answer.

Fun with friends at snack!

Alex has the world on his shoulders.

Halloween is great!

Halloween was fun.In the last past years it had a haunted house. Before Halloween, we did some door decoration. That was really fun.Only it was a lot of R.I.P. signs that said Michael Jackson made by Fred and Jorge.(Fred and Jorge are really silly people in my class.)The other thing I loved was how I dressed up. I was a punk person.
